08 — FAQ
Questions,
answered.
New to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Send us a message and we’ll help you choose the right class.
Send us a messageCan adults start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as beginners?
Absolutely. Our adult BJJ program welcomes complete beginners, including people who have never trained martial arts before. Classes are coached at an appropriate pace, and you will be matched with respectful training partners.
What age can kids start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Kids can begin BJJ at age 4. Our youngest classes focus on movement, coordination, listening skills, discipline, and age-appropriate introductory techniques.
Can I start BJJ if I am out of shape?
Yes. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is beginner-friendly and can be started at many fitness levels. With regular practice, you can build fitness, mobility, confidence, and technique over time.
What should I wear to my first BJJ class?
For Gi classes, wear a BJJ Gi (kimono). For No-Gi classes, wear close-fitting athletic clothing such as a rash guard with board shorts or leggings. Contact us before your first class if you need help choosing gear.
What's the difference between Gi and No-Gi?
Gi BJJ uses a kimono and relies on grips for control and submissions. No-Gi uses athletic wear like rash guards and focuses more on body control and speed, without clothing grips.
How often should I train?
Beginners typically train 2–3 times a week. As you progress, many practitioners train 4–6 times a week. Consistency is key to improving in BJJ.
Is competition mandatory?
No. Many people train for fitness, self-defense, or personal development without ever competing. It's entirely up to you.
